Coffee being the most important agricultural commodity in the world, is cultivated by more than 80 countries, including Ethiopia, and this is exported in the raw, roasted or soluble form, to more than 165 countries across the continent. The Agricultural based Ethiopian economy highly depends on Arabica coffee as it contributes to more than 60% of the country’s foreign exchange earnings. The fact that the livelihood of more than 15 million people of the country is coffee dependant simply means that their daily survival is on the existence of Coffee. Therefore, the income generated from coffee by the Yirgacheffe coffee farmers directly affects their livelihoods and daily survival.
The Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union (YCFCU), currently represents over 43,794 farmers belonging to more than 300,000 families, and was established in June 2002. Its currently 23 member cooperatives are all located in Gedeo, southern Ethiopia. This area is in a region that is famous for coffee growing in the country.
The 62,004 hectares gardens that are dedicated to coffee alone, on average produce 9,000 tons of Yirgacheffe and 3,000 tons of Sidamo washed coffee each year. The area also produces 24,000 tons of sun-dried coffee annually.

Before Exportation, the coffee is brought to the quality control center in order to;-
- Verify the orginal character of the coffee
- Check if the green and cup quality have met the export standards
- Ensure the reputation of the country in general and at YCFCU particular for high quality coffee supply.

Then, the dried cherries are taken to the huller machine from which the undersized type is separated by reprocessing in Addis Ababa.

Harvesting is done carefully under close supervision. Before pulping, cherries are sorted to remove the unsuitable type. The clean cherries are pulped, fermented, washed and then dried to retain 12% moisture.
The dried coffee with parchment, is bagged and transported to the hulling machines and warehouse in Addis Ababa. After the parchment is removed the green beans are packaged in labeled bags of 60 kg each, ready for export.
